eJanma (ejanma.karnataka.gov.in) is Karnataka's online system for registering births and deaths, run by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics. Registrars and hospitals log in to it; citizens do not need an eJanma account. Which portal should you use for your birth certificate?
The right portal depends on when and where the birth was registered. eJanma stores the records, but citizens usually download certificates through Seva Sindhu or the CRS portal.

Last year a software engineer from Whitefield came to me after three Saturdays of queuing at the civic office for his daughter's birth certificate. Once he knew which portal to use, he downloaded and printed it in about 40 minutes. That is the point of this guide: pick the right portal first, and most of the work is already done.
What is eJanma Karnataka?
eJanma (also written e-Janma or eJanMa) is the Government of Karnataka's web system for recording every birth, death and stillbirth in the state. It is managed by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, where the Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths sits. The official address is ejanma.karnataka.gov.in.
Registrars in city corporations, municipalities, gram panchayats and hospitals enter each event into eJanma. The certificate you download later is generated from that record, which is why it carries a digital signature and a QR code.
What eJanma does well:
- Stores digitised birth and death records from across Karnataka.
- Lets anyone verify a birth or death certificate with the registration number and date.
- Feeds records to Seva Sindhu, where citizens download certificates.
Where it falls short: older records, especially from before about 2003 and from rural registration units, are often not digitised. If your record does not appear, it may simply never have been uploaded.
Can citizens log in to eJanma?
No. In most cases citizens do not need an eJanma account. The eJanma login is used by registrars, hospitals and government staff to enter and approve records. If you searched "ejanma login" to get a birth certificate, go to Seva Sindhu and log in there with your mobile number and OTP.
The eJanma homepage still has public options, such as birth and death certificate verification, which work without logging in.
How do I download a Karnataka birth certificate online?
You can download a registered Karnataka birth certificate free of cost as a digitally signed PDF with a QR code. Most people use Seva Sindhu; parents of children born in a hospital from 2024 onward use the CRS portal.
Download through Seva Sindhu (most records)
- Open sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in and log in with your mobile number and OTP.
- Search for the birth certificate service, listed under the Planning, Programme Monitoring and Statistics Department.
- Enter the registration number, or the child's name, date of birth and place of registration.
- Check that the details shown are correct.
- Download the PDF, save a copy, and print it on A4 paper if you need a hard copy.
Download through the CRS portal (hospital births from 2024)
- Open dc.crsorgi.gov.in and choose the birth certificate download option.
- Enter the registration number given by the hospital, the date of birth and the district.
- Download the PDF.
How to check that a certificate is genuine
Scan the QR code printed on the certificate with your phone, or open ejanma.karnataka.gov.in, choose birth and death verification, and enter the registration number and date of birth. If the details match, the certificate is valid.
Tip: Chrome or Firefox on a desktop or laptop works more reliably than a mobile browser on these portals. Keep the registration number handy; you will need it again for passport, Aadhaar and school applications.
How do I find a birth certificate without the registration number?
Search by name and date instead. On Seva Sindhu, enter the child's name exactly as registered, the date of birth and the place of registration. If nothing appears:
- Search with only the first name. Many births are registered before a full name is chosen.
- Search with the mother's name or a "Baby of [mother's name]" entry, which hospitals often use.
- Ask the hospital for the birth summary or a copy of Form 1; it shows the registration number.
- Visit the registrar of the area where the birth happened, not where you live now, with the parents' ID.
What if eJanma or Seva Sindhu shows "record not found" or will not open?
Most errors have a simple cause. Here is what each one usually means and what to do.
"Record not found"
The record was never digitised, the name was entered differently, or you are on the wrong portal for that birth year. Check the portal table at the top of this page, then try the name variations above. If it still fails, the registrar's office can search the paper register.
"This site can't be reached" or the page will not open
Karnataka government portals are often down for maintenance late at night and at weekends. Try a desktop browser on a different internet connection during weekday office hours. If the site is still down after 48 hours, contact the helpline.
The PDF is blank or will not download
Clear your browser cache and cookies, close the browser, and try again in Chrome or Firefox on a computer. If it fails three times in a row, the problem is on the server side. Try again the next working morning.
The OTP does not arrive
Check that the mobile number is the one linked to your account, wait two minutes, and request the OTP once more. Repeated requests can lock you out for a while. If the number is old or wrong, contact the helpline to update it.
How do I get an old birth certificate in Karnataka?
Old birth certificates are often not online, so you will usually need to apply offline. Records from before about 2003, especially from rural areas, were not fully digitised.
- Search Seva Sindhu by name and date of birth first, in case your record was uploaded later.
- If it is not found, go to the registrar where the birth was registered: the municipal office in towns, or the taluk office or Nadakacheri in rural areas.
- Take any old copy of the certificate, a school leaving certificate, and the parents' ID.
- Once the registrar issues a copy from the register, ask whether the record can be digitised so you can download it in future.

How do I get a birth certificate in Bengaluru now that BBMP is GBA?
Births registered under BBMP remain valid. Since September 2025, BBMP's work has been handled by the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and its five city corporations: North, South, East, West and Central Bengaluru.
- To download a certificate, use Seva Sindhu, or the CRS portal for hospital births from 2024 onward, exactly as for the rest of Karnataka.
- For a copy from the register, go to the health office of the city corporation that now covers your old BBMP ward.
- Large private hospitals in Bengaluru usually register births electronically, so the certificate is often online within a couple of weeks of birth.

How do I correct a birth certificate in Karnataka?
Small spelling mistakes can be requested online, but changes to the date of birth or a parent's name need the registrar's approval with documents.

Start the request online so you get a reference number, then follow up at the registrar's office with your documents. Approved corrections usually take a few weeks to appear online. For a change of name after registration, a gazette name change may also be needed.
What are the rules for late birth registration?
A birth should be reported within 21 days. After that, the later the registration, the higher the approving authority.

This matters more than ever. For anyone born on or after 1 October 2023, the birth certificate is the single proof of date and place of birth for school admission, Aadhaar, passport, driving licence, the voter list and government jobs. Register and correct it early.
Is the digital birth certificate valid, and can I keep it in DigiLocker?
Yes, the downloaded certificate is valid. It is digitally signed and carries a QR code linked to the government record, and it is accepted for passports, Aadhaar, banks and school admission. A few offices still ask for a printed copy with the registrar's seal, so check before you go.
You can also save the PDF to your DigiLocker account so it is always on your phone. There is no separate eJanma mobile app; use the Seva Sindhu or CRS website in your phone's browser.

Numbers on government portals change from time to time, so confirm them on each portal's Contact Us page. For a record held by a particular hospital or gram panchayat, the district registrar's office usually resolves problems faster than the central helpline.
Before you call, keep the registration number, the name on the record and the date of birth ready. Calls between 10 and 11 am on weekdays tend to get through faster.
How do I download a death certificate from eJanma?
Death certificates follow the same route as birth certificates. Download through Seva Sindhu using the death registration number, or the person's name, date and place of death. To check a death certificate, use the birth and death verification option on the eJanma homepage.

What changed in birth registration law in 2026?
Parliament passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in August 2026. If a birth is reported more than two years late, only a Judicial Magistrate of the First Class can order its registration. Delays of one to two years still go to a district or sub-divisional magistrate.
How is my data on eJanma protected?
Only authorised registrars and hospitals can enter or change eJanma records, using official logins, and every certificate carries a QR code that links back to the government record. Never share your OTP or registration number with an agent or website you do not trust.
