The Real Guide to Name Change Advertisement in Bangalore Newspapers (2026)

By Suresh Iyengar — Legal Documentation Consultant, Bangalore. 11 years placing public notices across Karnataka for individual clients, NRIs, and corporate HR departments.

Most of the people who call us don't know that this is done in a certain order. Someone at the Passport Office informs them that they must have newspaper clippings after they have already paid an attorney and obtained an affidavit. Confusion then starts, especially when there are deadlines to meet (such as when applying for a visa or changing jobs). This guide helps you understand the newspaper ad component, including what it is, how much it costs, what papers you need, and how to complete it without going over budget or having your requests turned down.

Why a Newspaper Advertisement for Name Change is Legally Required

The Ministry of External Affairs' directives and the Indian Evidence Act public notice statute provide a succinct response.

In India, changing your name is a legal statement that impacts all of your official records, including personal documents, bank accounts, and government databases. Publicising an advertisement in a newspaper is a public notification, not only a formality. This notification enables anyone to be openly notified about your name change, including creditors, employers, judges, and even family members. It keeps everything clear and shields you from future fraud and legal issues.

In particular, the Passport Office would not alter a name without it; since 2025, they have tightened their oversight to avoid name inconsistencies with Aadhaar and PAN. In the absence of proof, online services like EPFO or mutual fund accounts typically report inconsistencies, and the great majority of banks won't either if they are careful. If you ever need a Gazette Notification (which you shall see about later), you will need the newspaper clippings as evidence of that. When providing OCI to NRIs, foreign embassies also demand these originals.

A Jayanagar schoolteacher who changed her last name after getting married was one of my clients last year, but she never placed the advertisement. When her passport renewal was needed seven years later due to a family emergency, she had to redo the affidavit, place the advertisement, and submit it. Additional recent instances include a Whitefield technician who updated his LinkedIn profile being requested by his company to deliver cuttings to HR. Don't wait until the last minute to post.

The 3-Step Name Change Procedure in Karnataka

Step 1: The Affidavit

This is a legal declaration prepared on stamp paper. It must be signed by you and attested by a notary. The affidavit should clearly mention your old name, new name, father’s or husband’s name, your address, and the reason for the name change.

Do not skip this step or try to do it later. The date of the affidavit is required in the newspaper ad, so both steps are connected.

Step 2: Newspaper Publication — the name change newspaper ad for passport step most people get wrong

In Karnataka, you must publish your name change in two newspapers—one in English and one in Kannada. Both should be widely circulated. This step is mandatory, especially for passport updates.

For English, commonly accepted newspapers include Deccan Herald and Times of India. For Kannada, Vijay Karnataka or Prajavani are good options.

The ad should be simple and include:

  • Your old name
  • Your new name
  • Father’s or husband’s name
  • Your address
  • Date of the affidavit

Keep it short (3–5 lines). There is no need for display ads or special formatting. A simple classified ad is enough.

Step 3: Gazette Notification

This step is not required for everyone. It is mainly needed for government employees or when updating certain central government records.

For most private individuals updating documents like passport, bank accounts, or Aadhaar, Gazette notification is usually not required.

If you are unsure, check with your HR department or the authority where you are submitting the name change request.

What the Ad Actually Costs — and Why ₹799 is Possible

Classified lineage adverts, which are priced per line or word-name changes—three to five lines are published in Karnataka newspapers. Vijay Karnataka charges 150–180 per line in 2026, whereas Deccan Herald charges approximately 180–220 per line. With taxes and agency costs excluded, the total for a 3–5 line advertisement comes to about 600–800. Combinations of prajavani can occasionally be found for less than ₹650.

For the Bangalore newspaper, we charge 799/-all included to change the newspaper's name to your name with a standard advertisement in both Kannada and English. Everything is included in this ₹799 package: digital clippings, GST, proof approval, ad drafting, and submission. There aren't any additional costs like booking or edition fees.

Every quarter, rates are adjusted based on the amount of advertisements and the cost of paper. Before making a reservation, these numbers are double-checked with publisher portals as of April 2026. This year, there have already been two price adjustments. Some agencies charge ₹1,200 or more, however this typically includes unnecessary display enhancements. To keep prices down, it is preferable to use straightforward classified ads for name change advertisements.
