In India, most women change their name after marriage. Now even men change their names due to astrological or various other reasons, and these name changes should get displayed in all government documents.
In 2017,the Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing at the Indian Merchant’s Chamber Ladies wing stated that the women do not have to change their names in their passports anymore after marriage. It invited multiple responses from the public ,who claimed that even prior to this announcement there was no such mandatory requirement. On the issue of online name change ,the instruction booklet of the passport application form on the Passport Seva website says This will be applicable to an applicant who has even minutely changed the name or a female after marriage.

Steps for Submitting an online form
- Register by clicking On the Register Now option on the home page by visiting the Passport Seva Online Portal
- Now,use the registered Login Id to log onto the Passport Seva Online Portal
- Click Apply For A New Passport /Reissue A Passport
- The form should be submitted after filling it with relevant information
- For arranging an appointment ,go to the view saved /Submitted Application Form and click on the Pay and Schedule Appointment option.Online Payment is required for the booking appointments at all Passport Seva Kendras /Passport Offices.
- For Printing the application receipt which contains the Application Reference Number (A.R.N)/Appointment Date ,click the Print Application Receipt Link
- After Payment is done ,visit the Passport Seva Kendra/Regional Passport Office along with original documents where appointment is booked.
Steps for e-form Submission
It can be noted that today provisions are made to facilitate submission of the documents online, just like any other government documentation for more convenience .
- Complete this process by downloading the e-form from download e-form link on the main page ,fill it and click the Validate and Save button
- This will produce an XML file which will be required from uploading in the system later
- By Logging into the Passport Seva Online Portal with the registered Login Id using the same procedure as above.After login it successfully ,click on the Upload Form option to upload the XML file
- Now ,we should not upload the Pdf form because the system only accepts XML files
- For making an appointment with the nearest Passport Seva Kendra (P.S.K)/Regional Passport Office (R.P.O) using the original documents ,we must go through the same payment process
Requirement of documents for name change in Passport
- 1 ) Photocopy with an original marriage certificate
- Old passport in original with self attested photocopies of the 1st 2 and the last 2 copies ,including the emigration check required /non-ECR page and the page of observation made by the passport issuing authority as well as the validity extension page if any case of passport with a short validity
- Current residence proof
- Proof of education
- A photocopy of spouse’s passport
Fees for name change in the passport
The name change requires a re-insurance of the passport,which is chargeable depending on the validity,number of pages and the type of application.For 10 year validity with 60 pages the cost is rs 2000.for 10 year validity with 36 pages the cost is rs 1,500 and the cost for tatkal application is rs 2,000 in additional to regular charges.

If spouse is a foreign citizen –
If the spouse is of a citizen of another country,their full name must be mentioned.There is no need to mention the spouse’s nationality with a prefix or a suffix.
